Patio Door Blinds
A patio door isn't just a big window. It's a doorway you walk through many times a day, it often looks straight onto a yard, balcony or neighbour, and on south- and west-facing walls it takes the full afternoon sun. Sliding patio door blinds have to cover a wide span of glass, clear the handle and the sliding panel, and get out of the way quickly when you want to step outside — so the right blind for the door isn't always the right blind for the window beside it.
We don't sell off-the-shelf door sizes. A specialist visits, measures the glass, frame, handle and the space on either side, and brings real samples of the styles that suit sliding glass — so you can compare them in your own light before you decide. Free, with no obligation.

Door Problems We Solve
Most people call us about one of four problems at the patio door. Here's how each one shapes the blind we'd recommend.
Privacy for Sliding Doors
Ground-floor doors and balconies often face a yard, walkway or the unit across. Zebra and vertical blinds let you angle for privacy while keeping daylight; blackout fabric gives full privacy at night, when a lit room is most visible from outside.
Glare & Heat Control
West- and south-facing patio doors take the strongest afternoon sun. Solar and light-filtering roller fabrics cut glare on screens and slow UV fading on floors and furniture while keeping a view out.
Traffic Flow & Easy Access
A door blind has to clear the walkway in seconds. Vertical blinds stack to one side; roller and zebra shades roll up above the frame. We plan the stack and the mount so nothing catches on the handle or the sliding panel.
Pets & Kids
Cordless and motorized operation takes cords and chains out of a high-traffic doorway, and vertical vanes simply part when a dog or cat nudges through.
Door Blind Options
Six styles we fit on patio doors most often — each one solves a slightly different problem.
Vanes stack neatly to one side so the walkway stays fully clear. Fabric, PVC and S-curve vanes — the most practical option for very wide door walls.
View Vertical Blinds →Alternating sheer and solid bands shift from open view to privacy without raising the shade. A clean, modern look on sliders, often split into one shade per door panel.
View Zebra Blinds →Solar and light-filtering fabrics cut glare and UV while keeping your view of the yard, then roll up neatly above the frame when you want the door clear.
View Roller Shades →For patio doors off a bedroom or TV room, blackout fabric blocks outside light and gives full privacy at night. Mounted outside the frame to keep edge gaps small.
View Blackout Blinds →Cellular fabric traps air against the glass — the most insulating choice for a large, drafty glass door. Best on doors that aren't opened constantly.
View Honeycomb Blinds →Horizontal slats with tilt control and a wood grain finish. Best suited to narrower patio doors and French doors — on wide sliders, the full stack has to be raised to walk through.

Vertical vs. Horizontal
The first decision on any sliding door is which way the blind should move. Here's the honest trade-off.
Vertical Patio Door Blinds
They open sideways, the same way the door slides, so you can pull them back just far enough to walk through, and they handle very wide spans without sagging. The trade-off is the stack: gathered vanes cover a strip of glass on one side when fully open. See our vertical blinds for sliding doors.
Horizontal Patio Door Blinds
Roller, zebra, honeycomb and faux wood all lift upward. They look cleaner and leave the whole glass clear when raised, but the blind has to go all the way up before you can walk through. On wide sliders we often fit two shades side by side — one over the moving panel, one over the fixed panel — so you only raise the one you use.
What We Usually Recommend
If the door is opened constantly, vertical blinds or a split horizontal shade are the most practical. If it's opened now and then and the look matters most, a full-width zebra or roller shade — motorized on wide doors — usually wins. We'll talk it through at your door, not from a catalogue.

Smart Home Ready
Wide doors are where motorization earns its keep — every style above can be built motorized.
One-Touch Control
Open and close the door blind from a remote, wall switch or smartphone app, with Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit integration available.
Scheduled Sun Control
Have the shade lower before the afternoon sun reaches a west-facing door and rise again in the evening — useful for protecting floors and furniture while you're out.
Cordless by Design
No cords or chains hanging in a busy doorway, which makes motorized blinds a natural fit for homes with young children and pets.
Power Options
Hardwired, battery, rechargeable and solar options, chosen around whether there’s power near the door. More on our motorized blinds page.

Common Questions
It depends on how often you use the door and what you're trying to fix. Vertical blinds are the most practical for doors opened many times a day because they stack to one side. Zebra and roller shades give a cleaner, more modern look and work well split into two shades on wide sliders. Blackout fabric suits doors off a bedroom or media room, and honeycomb is the most insulating. We usually narrow it down to two options at the free in-home visit.
Vertical blinds open sideways, the same way the door slides, so you can walk through without raising the whole blind — the practical choice for busy doors and very wide spans. Horizontal styles (roller, zebra, honeycomb and faux wood) look cleaner and clear the full glass when raised, but have to go all the way up before you can walk through. On wide doors, two horizontal shades side by side are a good middle ground.
They shouldn't. During the visit we measure the handle depth and the sliding panel, then choose the mount — usually outside the frame on patio doors — and the bracket depth so the blind hangs clear of the handle and doesn't rub when the door slides.
Vertical blinds are usually the easiest to live with. The vanes part when a dog or cat pushes through, and a bent vane can usually be replaced on its own rather than replacing the whole blind. Roller and zebra shades also work well as long as they're raised clear of the doorway when pets are using it — motorized shades make that easy.
Yes. Loose cords and chains are a known strangulation hazard for young children, and the patio door is one of the busiest spots in the house. Cordless and motorized patio door blinds remove cords from the doorway entirely, which is why we recommend them for family homes.
Honeycomb (cellular) blinds are the most insulating option — the cells trap a layer of air against the glass, which helps reduce heat loss through a large glass door in winter and heat gain in summer. Solar roller fabrics also cut heat from direct sun. Whatever the style, a blind fitted closely to the frame does more than one with large gaps around it.
Yes. Every style we fit on patio doors can be motorized, with remote, wall switch and app control, and Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit integration available. Motorization is most useful on wide doors, and scheduling lets the blind close before strong afternoon sun reaches your floors.
Blackout fabric stops light coming through the material itself, but any blind on a door can let a little light in around the edges. Mounting outside the frame with a generous overlap on each side keeps those gaps to a minimum — the setup we recommend for bedrooms and media rooms.
Yes. Replacing worn-out or broken patio door blinds — often old vertical blinds with missing or bent vanes — is one of the most common reasons people call us about a door. We measure the door fresh rather than copying the old blind's size, so the new one fits the door you actually have.
It depends on the width of the door, the style and fabric, and whether you add motorization, so there's no single price that fits every door. We measure and quote in your home for free, with no obligation, so the number you get is for your door rather than a generic estimate.
